E-bikes are not electric bikes but rather pedal assist bikes; the electric motor is there to help the cyclist when riding uphill, ideal for our mountainous terrain.
With an e-bike you can choose how much assistance you want from the motor. While an electric bike (with throttle) is practically a motorised scooter, the e-bike has a motor that is only activated by pedalling. In fact, the e-bike has a sensor that activates the motor when the cyclist needs it, but it is their legs that provide propulsion.
On Alpine cycle paths, especially when you need to restart on a hill after a stop, the e-bike gives a little helping hand to the cyclist, who will have less difficulty that if they were using a normal road bike.
Where can you try an e-bike in Bormio? There are numerous routes and itineraries around the area, the same in fact that you may be familiar with for road bikes. It makes no sense to use an e-bike on flat roads, so there is no point in using one around the town centre.
If you are not used to cycling, then start off on an easy route, like the road up to Lake Cancano. If on the other hand you want to really see what the e-bike can do and you are an expert cyclist, then head to the Stelvio pass with its 11% gradient and 1800m elevation gain.
In and around Bormio there is no shortage of routes to try out a pedal assisted e-bike.
